Continuing education is a general term applied to a wide-ranging areas of post-secondary learning activities and programs. Recognized forms of continuing education can be (both on-campus and online) and include; formal personal enrichment courses, non-degree career training, degree credit courses by non-traditional approaches, workforce training, self-directed learning (such as through Internet interest groups, clubs or personal research activities) and experiential learning as applied to problem solving.

Due to the ever increasing information and new skills required to practice as a competent Physician Assistant continuing medical education (CME) has become an important part of the profession.

Physician Assistant Cme refers to a a form of continuing education (CE) that specifically serves those practicing as PAs to maintain competence and learn about new and developing areas of their field. These activities, which are essential to furthering anyone's career who works as a PA may take place as written publications, live events, online programs, audio, video, electronic media or a graduate residency program. Content for these programs is created, reviewed, and presented by expert faculty in very specific specialties.

Similar to the process used in academic journals, any potentially conflicting financial relationships for faculty members must be both transparent and resolved in a productive manner.

Once the PA student is a graduate, and has learned how to become a competent health care practitioner they must maintain active certification status, by completing 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years. Much of this can also be done on-line. A recertification exam must also be taken every six years. Recertification can be attained alternatively by combining learning experience with a take-home exam. In the United States, many states require CME for medical professionals to maintain their licenses.

In the United States, continuing education enrollment can often be done part time, in the evenings or on weekends.
